Universal has now locked in its first new cast member to join its highly successful Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, with production set to start this spring.
Kim Basinger is set to play the key role of Elena Lincoln, Christian Grey’s Business partner and former lover in E.L James’ Fifty Shades Darker, sources tell Variety.
The neat thing, that is quite genius, about this casting announcement is that Basinger was in a film similar to Fifty Shades of Grey in the eighties titled
9½Weeks (also based on a bestselling book). it also tells the story of a BDSM relationship between a rich, dominant man and woman. Unlike Fifty Shades, however,
9½ didn’t make over $160 million at the domestic box office.
Jamie Dornan, who plays the character of Christian Grey, also mentioned in an interview how he watched the film when he was a young teenager:
“I probably saw 9½
Weeks when I was too young to see that. And watched it like a pervert child…towards 14.“
Sometimes it is just such a small world and things really do come full circle.
